Abstract
Objectives: This study examines the moderation of family functioning in the effect of adolescent temperament on smartphone addiction.

Methods: Adolescents identified as exhibiting smartphone overuse were eligible for this study, and 147 adolescents (87 males and 60 females, age M=14.42 years old) completed questionnaires measuring novelty seeking (NS) and harm avoidance (HA) temperaments, family functioning, and smartphone addiction.

Results: Both NS and HA were found to have positive effects on adolescent smartphone addiction. The interaction effects between HA and each of the two family functioning variables (family adaptability and family cohesion) on adolescent smartphone addiction were significant, while the interaction effects between NS and family functioning variables were not significant. Subsequent analyses for clarifying the interaction patterns demonstrated that adolescents with high HA were found to be more likely than adolescents with low HA to become addicted to smartphones if their family¡¯s adaptability and cohesion were each in flexible and chaotic levels and in connected and enmeshed levels.

Conclusions: This study reconfirmed the importance of NS and HA temperament in adolescent smartphone addiction, and further illuminating that malleability of temperament from the influence of family on its effect on smartphone addiction differs depending on the type of temperament.
